Jaipur--The Pink City of India
Jaipur is a city in the state of Rajasthan, India.
Also called "the Pink City" Jaipur was founded in 1727 AD by Maharaja Jai Singh. The city is replete with monuments of historical significance including: the Amber Fort, Jaigarh FortCity Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and the magnificent Nahargarh Fort.
Jaipur is a city with an admirable 'floorplan'. The great width and regularity of its streets of Jaipur, which are laid out into six sections, are separated by broad streets which are 111 ft wide. The urban areas are similarly divided by networks of streets laid out to a grid pattern. Five sections of Jaipur wrap around the east, south, and west edges of a central palace quarter, with a sixth area just to the east.
The Palace enclave encloses a meandering palace complex (the Hawa Mahal, or palace of winds), traditional gardens, and even a small lake. Nahargarh Fort tops the hill in the northwest part of the old city.
Of special note is Sawai Jai Singh's observatory, Jantar Mantar.
